Now, might as well just get all the usual applicable cliches out of the way right now, as there are certainly several that apply on the 55th Anniversary Carrera. But don’t get too hung up on the significance of the anniversary, as this TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph is absolutely a release worth paying attention to, and one of our favorite sport watches on the show floor thus far. In the next few decades, the Carrera would grow out to become one of the icons of the watchmaking world.A 55 year anniversary isn’t traditionally celebrated in a sense, but that hasn’t stopped TAG Heuer from using it to commemorate the latest addition to what is arguably the motorsport watch of the 20th century, and the brand’s most historically significant collection: the Carrera.
A then new type of tension ring became of vital importance to the design: it allowed him to print scales on the ring that secured the plastic crystal to the case, making it possible to leave the dial as clean as possible. When creating the Carrera, he does sought to create a chronograph that was easy on the eyes and easily readable. When wrist chronographs began to become more and more popular, Jack noted that many of them had very busy dials that were at times hard to read. It was designed by Jack Heuer himself, who got the inspiration for the name in 1962 when talking to the parents of Mexican racing drivers known as 'the Rodriquez Brothers', who mentioned to him the grueling Carrera Panamericana Mexico race. The Carrera was originally launched in 1963.
